The role and its responsibilities

We are looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher in Islamic Studies to conduct outstanding research in Islamic Studies and contribute to the advancement of Islamic Studies at SOAS and beyond. You will be expected to conduct excellent research relating to Qur’anic Studies, preferably the Qur’an’s structure, coherence and its ways of making impact on the reader/listener, and publish at least two outstanding outputs as an outcome of the research. You will be expected to contribute to the research culture of the Centre of Islamic Studies and the Near and Middle East Section at SOAS and help organise and run the Centre’s events, workshops and other activities. You will also be expected to contribute to teaching related to Islamic Studies at SOAS.

Skills and experience

You will be required to have a good understanding of one or more of the key research areas in Qur’anic Studies, particularly the structure, coherence and impact of the Qur’an. Your ability to carry out high quality, publishable research together with your knowledge of the scholarship and of key debates in Islamic Studies, will enable you to be successful in this role. You will also have excellent proficiency in Arabic. The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, staff, academic colleagues, together with excellent time management and interpersonal skills, are also required for this post.
